While there is no need to wait to begin a new meditation practice, the beginning of a new year is a great time to start. Reading about meditation can sometimes make launching a practice seem overwhelming, however meditating doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, you have everything you need to meditate already. Here are a couple of tips to help you get started.

Get comfortable. Find a quiet room or corner of your home or office, where you know you won’t be interrupted for the duration of your meditation. Find a comfortable seat or use a cushion on the floor to elevate yourself slightly and sit with your hands resting gently on your knees. Sit up nice and tall, while remaining relaxed. You don’t want any discomfort or pain to distract you from your meditation so getting comfortable before you begin will make the whole experience more enjoyable.

Follow your breath. There are many types of meditation, including mantras or phrases that you repeat, walking meditation, guided meditation, and more. However, to keep things simple, begin by simply feeling the sensations of each inhale and exhale. Whenever you notice that your mind has wandered off and you begin thinking, gently bring your awareness back to your breath. Remember to be compassionate with yourself rather than judgmental. Continue to follow your breath for 5-10 minutes, setting an alarm to time the meditation without distraction.
